Solitude and Absence: the fate of Simone at INFLIGHT Gallery is companion to a work shown at CAST gallery earlier this year. Both refer to Bataille's outline of a sequel to Histoire de l'Oeil and the author's concept of cathartic salvation: the abdication of self as extreme self-expression. A splattered spartan trolley travels between the two works; at INFLIGHT it carries the character of Simone from the libidinous transgression of Histoire to the dark resolution of her eventual fate in The Sequel. “This exaltation is beyond any imagining; it surpasses everything. However, its basis is solitude and absence (Bataille, 2001[1967]: 80)”. Caz Rodwell completed her BFA (Hons) at the Tasmanian School of Art in 2006 with a body of multi media assemblages centred around George Bataille's short pornographic novel Histoire de l'Oeil (Story of the Eye). The Sacrifice: Don Aminado, was shown at HATCHED, the national graduate exhibition at PICA (Perth Institute of Contemporary Art) in 2007.
