James Newitt was born in Hobart, Tasmania in 1981, after graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours in 2003 he received an Australian Post-Graduate Award, enabling him to study towards a PhD at the Tasmanian School of Art. James has previously worked as a graphic designer where he developed a hybrid practice which crosses fine art and design, often collaborating with other artists, designers and architects.

Within his practice James has conceptualised and directed video projects, large-scale public works, and curated contemporary art and music events.

James lectures in visual communication at the Tasmanian School of Art, and is a founding member and previous Chair of INFLIGHT Art Inc.
